Voices of Memory: Holocaust Education and Remembrance Across the Visegrad Countries and Moldova
The project aims to increase the quality of Holocaust education in the Visegrad countries and Moldova. Despite initiatives, significant gapsremain in awareness, educational curricula, preservation of local Jewish heritage and structures of remembrance. In the Visegrad region, despite some presence of Holocaust education, initiatives often lack depth and critical engagement. In Poland, the Holocaust is taughtprimarily through the lens of Polish heroism, overshadowing the complexities of Polish-Jewish relations before and during World War II.Hungary's curriculum includes the Holocaust, but there is a tendency to focus on national narratives, neglecting complicity andcollaboration in Nazi atrocities. In Czechia and Slovakia, there are sporadic educational programs, but they often neglect broader Europeancontexts and remain isolated failing to reach broader audiences. Moreover, per recent research results, antisemitism and Holocaust distortionare increasing concerns in these countries. Moldova's engagement with Holocaust education has been limited. The Jewish community, onceover 200,000, is under 10,000, primarily in Chisinau. Despite the profound impact, the historical narrative has often been overlooked orunderrepresented in educational settings. Recent efforts aim to address this gap. Initiatives by the OSCE Mission to Moldova and theMinistry of Education have introduced training for teachers and the creation of educational materials. However, the reach and impact remainlimited. There is a need for broader integration of Holocaust education into the curriculum.
